A powerful snowstorm has struck parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes region, bringing early winter conditions for Thanksgiving travelers and raising the likelihood of an additional early-season storm in the Northeast next week.
The National Weather Service said winter storm warnings and advisories were in effect from Montana to Ohio. Forecasters cautioned that airport delays and hazardous road conditions were likely, with snowfall in some areas expected to exceed one inch per hour.
By Saturday morning, more than eight inches of snow had already accumulated across northern Iowa. Similar totals are anticipated in Chicago and areas of Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan as the system moves eastward.
The storm is expected to disrupt one of the busiest travel weekends of the year as millions return home from the Thanksgiving holiday.
