Christine Lagarde has sought to calm speculation about a possible early resignation, saying she expects to complete her mandate as president of the European Central Bank.
The comments came amid growing political and financial uncertainty in Europe after media reports suggested that Lagarde might step down before the end of her term in October 2027.
Questions about Lagarde’s future intensified after the Financial Times reported that she could leave the post before France’s presidential election scheduled for April 2027.
An early departure could give outgoing French President Emmanuel Macron greater influence over the selection of her successor, according to political observers.
The ECB presidency is considered one of the most strategically important financial positions in Europe, and any leadership transition could carry implications for monetary policy direction across the eurozone.
In an interview with the The Wall Street Journal, Lagarde softened speculation surrounding an imminent exit but left open the possibility of stepping down before the end of her term.
“When I look back over these years, I believe we have accomplished a great deal… My priority is to ensure this legacy is consolidated and remains strong and credible,” she said.
She added that her focus remains on continuing her work “until the end of my mandate.”
The ECB said Lagarde has not made any decision regarding the conclusion of her tenure, although it did not directly deny earlier reports suggesting a potential resignation plan.
Analysts warn that an early resignation could expose the central bank to heightened political pressure, particularly amid rising electoral uncertainty in Europe.
Some commentators believe a premature exit could be interpreted as an attempt to influence the succession process ahead of potential gains by right-wing, Eurosceptic parties in France.
The ECB chief’s future remains closely watched as markets and policymakers monitor the stability of eurozone monetary leadership during a period of economic and political challenges.
