On Sunday, the Canary Islands government said a forest fire in Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, had consumed 8,398 hectares (20,751 acres) of land, adding that evacuation orders had been issued in 11 municipalities.

On Saturday, the government said the bushfires had spread to 5,000 hectares and were still out of control.

"Forest fires are spreading across 10 municipalities, although evacuations have been carried out in 11, covering an area of 8,398 hectares within a 70-kilometre [43-mile] circumference," the government said in a statement.

The statement added that the forest fires led to the evacuation of 12,279 people. The Canary Islands Rescue Service said on Saturday that preliminary estimates indicated that the number of evacuees could exceed 26,000.

Earlier this week, Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo described the fire as the most complex the region has seen in 40 years.
