A wildfire erupted on Saturday in the Chawkay district of Kunar province, Afghanistan, consuming nearly 30 hectares of forestland in the Dewgal Valley, according to local authorities.
Ehsanullah Ehsan, Director of Damage Assessment at the Kunar Directorate for Natural Disaster Management, confirmed that the blaze originated in the Nagu forest area near the villages of Dewgal and Lamkanda.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, Ehsan noted that local herders—who are often known to light fires in the forest—may have unintentionally triggered the incident.
Residents in Chawkay have reported frequent small fires over the past two months, raising concerns about the ongoing vulnerability of the region’s woodlands. These repeated fires have already damaged multiple areas of natural forest.
