The World Health Organization (WHO) announced today, Wednesday, that the number of infections with the Coronavirus (known also as (COVID-19) increased slightly across the globe throughout the last week.
On the other hand, the organization assured that the death toll of the deadly virus declined. It added that the last death toll was the lowest over the period from October 2020.
However, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, General –Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), said that just distribution of vaccines, medical examinations, medicaments, and tools of personal protection is the only way to come over the pandemic of the Coronavirus.
He added during his speech to the Board of Directors of the Initiative of Facilitating of Spreading out Tools of Fighting Coronavirus”, that despite progress in checking the pandemic, it is still in a very dangerous stage.
The pandemic threatens most nations of the world at the present time so efforts must be exerted to fight it.
Currently, more than 180 countries and economies contribute to a plan aiming at securing the availability of vaccines all across the world.
He revealed that COVAX, a mechanism to supply the anti-corona vaccines to the poor nations, was funded completely for 2021 although there are great fears that companies couldn’t provide supplies of the vaccines in time.
General -Director of the WHO warns that vaccines of the COVID-19 are considered limited resources throughout the months to the end of the standing year, recommending that those vaccines should be used according to a strategic plan.
He indicated, over a news conference held in the headquarters of the WHO in Geneva, Switzerland Monday evening, that leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) have pledged over their last summit in Britain last month, to fund COVAX with $4 billion to ensure the just distribution of vaccines.
Dr.Ghebreyesus affirmed that the developed countries are still contracting the producers to get many doses of the vaccines which diminishes the chances of COVAX to get the vaccines to the poor countries even funds are sufficient.
However, Dr. Antony Faucci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), criticized the producers of the vaccines for refusing to relinquish patents of developing the vaccines as the patents are always a thorny matter.
