The Confederation of the African Football (CAF) have chosen Victor Gomes to officiate the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Egypt and Senegal.

Egypt reached the AFCON final after beating hosts Cameroon 3-1 in the semi-final to book a spot in the final against Senegal. The Teranga Lions, on the other hand, beat Burkina Faso 3-1 to reach their third ever final.

Gomes will be assisted by fellow South African Zakhele Siwela as well as Lesotho’s Souru Phatsoane.

Who is Victor Gomes?

Victor Gomes is a South African referee, who was born in Johannesburg on December 15, 1982. He received the international badge in 2011.

History of Gomes in AFCON tournaments?

Gomes was in charge of the final match between Algeria and Senegal in the 2019 edition, which was held at Cairo Stadium.

For the Egyptian national team, Gomes officiated four games for the Pharaohs, and they came out victorious in each one. The first time was against Uganda in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, which Egypt won 1-0.

He was then in charge of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers against Tunisia, whom Egypt beat 3-2.

Then in the 2019 AFCON finals, he refereed Egypt's game against DR Congo, which ended 2-0.

The last time he officiated the Pharaohs' match was in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers when Egypt beat Libya 3-0.

He is well known for awarding penalty kicks in most of the matches he refereed during his career.

During the ongoing AFCON edition, the South African referee ran three games, showing ten yellow cards and zero red cards.

He was selected to run the Confederation Cup final between Raja and Vita Club in 2017-18.

Two years later, he was in charge of officiating the Zamalek-Raja match in the semi-final of the CAF Champions League.

His most significant match with the Egyptian clubs was in 2017 in the CAF Champions League final, in which Al Ahly defeated Étoile Sportive du Sahel 6-2.
