The World Health Organization has confirmed that the Hantavirus strain linked to the outbreak aboard the MV Hondius is the Andes variant, one of the rare strains capable of spreading between humans.
According to the organization, the outbreak had reached 11 total cases as of 13 May, including three deaths.
Health officials confirmed that eight cases were verified through laboratory testing, while two additional cases remain classified as probable and one case in the US is still under investigation.
The WHO stated that all recorded infections were linked to passengers or individuals aboard the cruise ship.
Based on current figures, the outbreak’s fatality rate stands at nearly 27 per cent, raising concerns among international health authorities monitoring the spread of the virus.
