The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that more than one billion people in 43 countries around the world are at risk of contracting cholera.
The UN organization noted that the year 2022 witnessed an increase in the number of countries reporting an outbreak of the disease by 50% compared to previous years.
And the head of the organization's cholera control team, Philip Barboza, warned - in a press conference today, Friday - that this trend continues, and that only in the past week 3 countries reported new cases of the disease.
He explained that 22 countries are currently fighting an outbreak of cholera in more than 5 regions. He pointed out that this increase in the disease outbreak is straining the global response capacity, and the death rate is still very high.
He warned that the fatality rates are the highest recorded in more than a decade, as they reached 2%, which is much higher than what is acceptable.
