WHO: 14 African Countries Report Monkeypox Cases until Final Week in Sep.

On Sunday, the World Health Organization (WHO) released an updated report on the situation of Monkeypox around the world.

The report revealed that 14 African countries reported mpox cases in the last six weeks (until September 29). The report referred that these countries are having active outbreaks.

Congo came on the top affected countries by reporting 5610 confirmed cases, and 25 deaths, followed by Burundi with 853 confirmed cases, and Nigeria with 78 confirmed cases. Both Burundi and Nigeria didn't report any deaths of the virus. 

The report also indicated information about the first mpox case due to clade Ib MPXV which is recorded in India. This is the second imported case of clade Ib MPXV infection in the WHO South-East Asia Region (SEAR) and the third outside the African Region.

Regarding the case of mpox due to clade Ib MPXV in India, it is an adult Indian male, and his international history showed trips to the UAE. The patient developed mpox symptoms on 8 September 2024 during his visit to the UAE. 

On 13 September, he arrived in India and on 16 September was admitted to a public hospital. 

On 19 September, samples were tested at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune, India and confirmed MPXV infection. 

The patient recovered without complications and was discharged on 30 September 2024.
