Satellite images released on Thursday confirmed the complete demolition of the East Wing of the White House to make way for the construction of a massive new ballroom, estimated to cost $300 million.
According to dated images from Planet Labs, a large pile of rubble is now visible where the historic structure once stood. The full demolition of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks contrasts sharply with former President Donald Trump’s earlier statements suggesting only a partial teardown.
Trump had originally revealed in July that the 90,000-square-foot ballroom would not interfere with the existing White House building, noting that it would be built nearby without touching the original structure.
However, as demolition began this week, he announced that, following consultations with architects, completely removing the East Wing was deemed a better approach than a partial demolition.
The projected cost of the new ballroom has risen to $300 million, up from earlier estimates of $250 million and $200 million announced in previous months. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that the updated figure represents the final construction cost and emphasized that taxpayers will not bear any financial burden.
Funding for the new venue, which will host state dinners and large official events, will be covered entirely by private donors, including Trump himself. The donor list released by the White House on Thursday includes major American technology companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, and Meta, as well as defense contractor Lockheed Martin.
Individual contributors include the family of Howard Lutnick, who serves as Secretary of Commerce in the Trump administration.
