In US, the White House was placed under a brief lockdown on Monday following a shooting incident near the Washington Monument, according to the US Secret Service.
Authorities said a suspect opened fire in the National Mall area after being confronted by security personnel. The Secret Service confirmed that officers returned fire, and one bystander was struck by the suspect’s gunfire.
Deputy Secret Service Director Matt Quinn said the incident prompted an immediate security response, with emergency teams deployed to the scene. Members of the public were urged to avoid the area as investigations continued.
The shooting occurred close to the White House while President Donald Trump was hosting an event focused on small businesses. Despite the security scare, the president’s schedule was not interrupted.
The White House was briefly secured as a precaution while authorities assessed the situation. Press members outside the building were moved into the briefing room during the response.
Officials also confirmed that Vice President JD Vance had passed through the area shortly before the shooting, but stressed there was no indication the motorcade was targeted.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
