WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a long-awaited feature that will allow group members to share recent chat history with newly added participants, a move expected to significantly improve how users join and follow group conversations.
The messaging app, owned by Meta, is currently testing the feature in its beta version. It allows group members to share up to 100 recent messages sent within the past 14 days with any new participant added to a group.
According to WABetaInfo, the shared messages will appear in a different color from the rest of the conversation, making it easier for new members to distinguish previously shared content from live messages.
The update is designed to help users quickly catch up on recent discussions and access key information without disrupting the flow of the group by asking others to repeat earlier conversations. Similar features are already common across several global messaging platforms.
To use the feature once available, users can add a new member through the group information screen, select the contact to be added, and then choose how many past messages to share. While the limit is set at 100 messages, users can opt to share fewer if they prefer to limit the amount of information disclosed, giving them full control over content sharing.
As with many experimental WhatsApp features, there is no confirmed timeline for a full public release. However, sources familiar with the update suggest that a wider rollout for iOS, Android and the web version of WhatsApp could take place soon.
Technology experts say the feature will make joining group chats more efficient, particularly in large and active groups where hundreds of messages are exchanged daily. By allowing new members to understand context instantly, the update is expected to streamline communication and improve the overall group messaging experience.
