WhatsApp is testing a new feature for iPhone users that displays a green dot next to a contact's profile picture to indicate when they are actively using the app, while continuing to respect existing privacy settings.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is available to a limited number of users through the latest TestFlight beta for iOS after first being introduced to Android beta testers last month.
The green indicator appears only when a contact is actively using WhatsApp and disappears once they leave the app or become inactive. It replaces the existing "Online" label on the contact information page with a simpler visual cue.
WhatsApp said the feature will remain subject to users' privacy preferences. Contacts who hide their "Last Seen" or "Online" status will not display the green indicator.
For now, the feature is visible only on a contact's profile page and does not appear in the chat list or conversation window. Reports suggest WhatsApp is also developing a new contacts section for iOS and Android that will highlight users who are currently online or were recently active.
The feature is being rolled out to a limited number of beta testers and may also reach some stable users through phased testing before a wider release. No official launch date has been announced.
