WhatsApp is developing a new AI-powered feature that could transform how users manage unread chats, allowing hundreds of messages to be summarized with a single tap.
The upcoming tool builds on an earlier feature introduced last year that enabled users to generate quick summaries within individual conversations. The latest update goes further by allowing multiple unread chats to be summarized at once, offering a faster way to catch up on large volumes of messages.
According to reports from WABetaInfo, the feature is designed to address the growing challenge of message overload faced by many users.
The technology behind the tool relies on “Private Processing,” an advanced AI system developed by Meta. This system processes messages in a secure, isolated environment, ensuring that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can access the original message content or the generated summaries.
With this approach, WhatsApp aims to deliver advanced AI capabilities without compromising user privacy or security standards.
The feature will not be enabled by default. Users will need to manually activate Private Processing in the app’s settings before using the new “Summarize” option, which appears when filtering unread chats.
Once activated, the app sends only the most recent messages from selected chats to the secure processing system, which then generates a comprehensive summary without exposing user data.
The feature is still under development and has not yet been officially released for Android users. It is expected to roll out in a future update in the coming weeks or months.
