WhatsApp has introduced a wide range of updates aimed at enhancing messaging, calling, and channel experiences, strengthening its position against competitors like Telegram and Discord.
One of the most noticeable new features is an "Online" indicator at the top of group chats. This shows users how many members are currently active and available to chat, making it easier to engage in real-time conversations.
Another upgrade to group chats allows users to better manage notifications. With the new "Notify for" setting, users can choose "Highlights" to receive notifications only for @mentions, replies, and messages from saved contacts. Alternatively, selecting "All" enables alerts for every message.
WhatsApp has also improved document sharing for iPhone users. A new option lets users scan and send documents directly from the app. By choosing "Scan Document" in the attachment options, users can quickly scan, crop, and save documents without needing a separate app.
iPhone users also benefit from new customization features. They can now set WhatsApp as their default app for messaging and calling, and during video calls, a simple pinch gesture allows them to zoom in easily.
Video call quality has been upgraded as well. WhatsApp announced improvements to its video technology, offering more reliable connections and higher-quality video with fewer dropped calls and less freezing. Enhanced bandwidth detection now supports more high-definition video calls even in weaker network conditions.
For event organization, WhatsApp now allows users to create events not only in group chats but also in one-on-one conversations. The event tool is also receiving upgrades, including RSVP options like "Maybe," the ability to invite a plus one, adding end dates and times, and pinning events to make them easier to locate.
Additionally, adding someone to an ongoing one-on-one call has become simpler. Users can now tap the call icon from a chat thread and select "Add to call" to bring someone into the conversation instantly.
Channels are also seeing several important updates. Admins can now record and share short videos with their followers and distribute unique QR codes that link directly to their channels. Moreover, users can receive written summaries of voice message updates from channels, allowing them to stay informed even when they cannot listen to audio messages.
