WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature aimed at boosting user privacy: advanced usernames with optional PINs. This update, referred to as "Username and PIN," will allow users to replace their phone numbers with unique usernames, offering an additional layer of privacy.
According to WABetaInfo, this feature will let users choose a memorable username instead of sharing their phone numbers for new interactions. The screenshot from the guide indicates that WhatsApp is exploring this advanced username option to improve phone number privacy, allowing users greater flexibility in managing their privacy experience.
Currently available to beta testers on WhatsApp Android version 2.24.18.2, this feature will be accessible to stable Android users in future updates. By selecting the "Username" option, new contacts will only see the username and not the phone number, enhancing privacy in the profile section.
Additionally, WhatsApp is working on an optional PIN feature for usernames. This PIN, consisting of four digits, will provide extra privacy, especially for people you haven’t interacted with before. Once a PIN is set, only those with the PIN can contact you on WhatsApp.
While this feature provides users with more control over their privacy, it's important to note that users who already have your phone number can still message you, even if the PIN feature is activated. However, you can use your username for starting new conversations.
The upcoming feature is optional and designed to give WhatsApp users more control over who can reach them on the platform, ensuring that only chosen individuals can initiate contact through their username.
