WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, has addressed a serious security vulnerability affecting Apple devices and is urging users of iPhones, iPads, and Macs to update the app immediately to protect their data.
According to a report from the German Press Agency (DPA), the vulnerability, identified as CVE-2025-55177, may have already been exploited alongside a separate flaw in Apple’s iOS system, known as CVE-2025-43300. Apple released a patch for the system-level flaw with the iOS 18.6.2 update on August 20.
WhatsApp confirmed that the secure version of its app for iOS is now 2.25.21.73, while the updated version for WhatsApp Business on both iOS and macOS is 2.25.21.78. Users are encouraged to verify their current version through the app’s settings under the “Help” section or by manually updating the app via the App Store.
Security experts warn that delaying such updates can leave devices exposed to potential attacks, particularly when vulnerabilities have already been identified and possibly exploited in the wild. While no widespread attacks have been confirmed, both WhatsApp and Apple acted swiftly to address the issue.
Users are also advised to enable automatic updates through their App Store settings to reduce the risk of missing future critical patches. WhatsApp reiterated its commitment to user privacy and security, stating that it continues to collaborate with platform providers like Apple to ensure vulnerabilities are identified and fixed quickly.
