Egyptian Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal paid an official visit to Juba on Monday for talks on means of promoting South Sudan peace and stability. The Egyptian delegation, headed by Abdel Aal, was received by Timothy Tot Chuol, Acting Speaker of South Sudan’s Parliament.
Abdel Aal said the visit represents a bridge between the people of Egypt and the people of South Sudan, and is an affirmation of the solid relations between the two nations.
The visit is set to include a number of activities including meetings with South Sudan’s minister of agriculture, South Sudan’s acting parliament speaker, as well as other senior South Sudanese officials to discuss fostering relations between the two countries and to exchange views on issues of common interest.
During the five-day visit, Egypt's House of Representatives speaker is expected to meet with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and hold talks with South Sudan parliament speaker on means of fostering parliamentary ties between Cairo and Juba.
President Salva Kiir, opposition leader Riek Machar and a handful of other groups signed the peace deal in September 2018.
Kiir and Machar participated in peace negotiations mediated by Uganda and Sudan, and by August 2018 a final cease-fire and power-sharing agreement, followed by a peace agreement to end the civil war called the ‘Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan,’ was signed by the government, the opposition party, and other rebel factions.
It is estimated that almost 400,000 people lost their lives during the civil war in South Sudan.
On November 7, Kiir and Machar agreed to give themselves another 100 days beyond the November 12 deadline to form a unity government.
In last October, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received President Kiir in Cairo, according to Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady.
Last November, Arab Parliament (AP) Speaker Mishaal bin Fahm al Salami urged the US Congress and Department of State to lift the name of Sudan from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.
Salami said that the decision was made on the basis of the Sudanese efforts at all the Arab, regional and international levels to combat terror and sponsor peace, the implementation of all the commitments agreed on with the US on combating terrorism by Sudan, supporting the peace process in South Sudan, promoting human rights and promoting freedoms for non-Muslims.
