Somalia is confronting a severe and escalating malnutrition crisis, with urgent humanitarian assistance and funding needed to prevent a worsening catastrophe, the World Food Programme (WFP) has warned.

The UN agency said on Friday that the country is among the hardest-hit regions globally in terms of acute malnutrition, with conditions reaching critical levels amid deteriorating food security.

Matthew Hollingworth, Assistant Executive Director for Programme Operations at the WFP, told reporters in Geneva that Somalia is experiencing an extremely serious nutrition emergency.

He said: Somalia is facing a very severe acute malnutrition crisis. It is one of the areas with the highest levels of malnutrition globally. Rates have reached critical levels at an extremely difficult time.

The WFP stressed that without immediate funding and expanded humanitarian support, millions of vulnerable people, particularly children, could face life-threatening consequences as food insecurity continues to rise.

The warning comes as Somalia continues to grapple with the combined impacts of conflict, climate shocks, and economic instability, which have significantly strained food systems and humanitarian response capacity across the country.
