The World Food Program (WFP) has warned that 19 million people, or about 40 percent of Sudan's population, will slip into the cycle of hunger, after months of battles between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), without a horizon for a sustainable cessation of the fighting.

Since the outbreak of the war in mid-April, the features of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis are taking shape due to the catastrophic repercussions resulting from the ongoing battles in the three cities of the capital, the Darfur region, and several regions of Kordofan state.

A spokesman for the World Food Program, Muhammad Al-Amin, told Sky News Arabia:

"WFP is very concerned about the food insecurity situation in the country."

"I did not expect that more than 19 million people would slip into hunger, and if that happened, it would be the highest number ever recorded in the country," he added.

He pointed out that the current conflict could undermine the agricultural season, as farmers face a crisis of insecurity and struggle to cope with the high prices of fertilizers and seeds.
