The World Food Programme (WFP) has launched an emergency operation to provide urgent food assistance to one million people in Lebanon affected by the recent escalation of violence.
On Sunday, the WFP announced the distribution of ready-to-eat food parcels, bread, hot meals, and food packages to families sheltering various locations across the country.
The program emphasized the importance of immediate humanitarian action, especially after the intensification of the conflict over the weekend, underscoring the need for rapid assistance.
The Israeli military has also confirmed the launch of dozens of new airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon.
This comes just two days after the killing of Hezbollah's Secretary General, Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli air raid, a development that has further heightened tensions in the region.
Matthew Hollingworth, WFP Director in Lebanon, stated that within a matter of days, the organization had already provided aid to thousands of newly displaced individuals.
As the situation continues to worsen, the WFP is preparing to extend support to up to one million people, combining both cash and food assistance to meet their needs.
Hollingworth also called on the international community for additional financial support, stressing that $105 million is required by the end of the year to ensure the continuation of this humanitarian response.
Corinne Fleischer, the WFP’s Regional Director for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe, warned that Lebanon is on the verge of collapse, emphasizing that the country cannot afford another war. With the economy already in shambles and widespread poverty, the current conflict risks pushing the nation to a breaking point.
