The World Food Programme (WFP), a United Nations agency, has announced a contribution of $11 million to provide vital monthly unconditional food assistance to over 1.3 million refugees in 13 camps across Uganda.

Abdulrahman Mejaj, WFP's representative in Uganda, emphasized that this contribution serves as crucial relief for the most vulnerable families in refugee camps.

He noted that since the beginning of 2024, nearly 40,000 refugees have newly arrived in Uganda, with the majority being women, children, and elderly individuals from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan.

The UN official added that in 2023 alone, 130,000 new refugees were registered, and since 2014, the number of refugees in Uganda has quadrupled from 390,000 to 1.6 million, making it the highest figure in any African country.

Many of the newly arrived refugees are fleeing conflicts in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and Sudan, often reaching the borders on foot or by bus.

Despite Uganda's progressive policies in supporting refugees, opportunities for refugees to earn a living in Uganda are limited, leading them to continue relying on humanitarian assistance.
