Greek Deputy Minister of Education Ms. Zetta Makri delivered a message on behalf of her government to the second panel of the World Youth Forum (WYF).

In a recorded video to the World Youth Forum in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, Makri revealed that Climate Change is one of the biggest challenges that pose a threat to the existence of human beings, affirming the urgent need to recognize the vital role of education during this crucial time.

"Climate change is the defining crisis of our time, and it is happening even more quickly than we feared, but we are far from powerless in the face of the global threat," she said.

"As the infinite cost of climate change reaches irreversible highs, now is the time for bold collective action."

In the same spirit, she noted that education is a perfect element in responding to this crucial issue as it can encourage people to change their attitudes and behavior and also help them make the right decisions.

"Understanding the causes and the defection of climate change is the first step in shifting minds, establishing new ways to combat the issue, and eliminating its impact as well," the Greek high-ranking official told the youths and the attendees.

She also recognized the vital role education plays in shaping the minds of young people, considering it to be an indispensable partner in attacking the issue of global warming.

"In classrooms, young people can discuss global warming and learn about how to adapt to climate change issues through educational environmental programs," she explained.

The annual forum, which aims to bring the world’s youth and nations’ builders together to promote dialogue and discuss development issues, returned this week after a one-year pause due to the coronavirus pandemic and will be running from 10 -13 January.
