On Tuesday, the United States decided to designate Bahrain-based Saraya al-Mukhtar " ("Squadrons of al-Mukhtar" group as terrorist group accusing it of being an Iran-backed terrorist organization and involved in plotting attacks against U.S. forces in Bahrain.
In a statement, the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo said that Saraya al-Mukhtar is an Iran-backed terrorist group based in Bahrain, adding that they receive financial and logistic support from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The newly-designated group is a Shia extremist organization that was established during 2013. The group listed the ruling Khalifa royal family, Bahrain security forces and Saudi Arabia as targets for attacks. It has claimed numerous attacks on Bahraini security forces by means of crudely produced improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and arson attacks.
