On Thursday, the US House voted for a bill that may admit Washington D.C. as the 51st state.
The city has more than 700,000 people which is bigger than the population of other US states such as Vermont.
Moreover, Vermont and other small states have representatives in Congress and in the US House, unlike D.C. that has only a voiceless representative in Congress. And, it pays federal taxes more than another 21 states.
If the state is officially admitted as a state, it will be the first US state with a black and non-white majority of the population.
