The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen pledged to speed up Ukraine's proposal for the European Union (EU) membership in the light of the Russian military operations in the state, media agencies reported on Friday.
She also undertook to speed up the process of accepting Ukraine as a full EU member since the process of the EU application usually takes years and long rounds of talks and discussions.
The EU Commissioner said: "It will not as usual be a matter of years to form this opinion but I think a matter of weeks."
Her statements came during a historical joint conference between von der Leyen and the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as part of her visit to Kyiv.
Von der Leyen inspected several scenes of war where hundreds of citizens wer killed and wounded, especially at Kyiv's suburbans.
She described: "The whole world is in mourning after everything that happened here."
It is worthy to mention that since the beginning of the Ukraine crisis about 4.1 million refugees have fled Ukraine; in addition, there are about 6.5 million people who have fled their homes and moved to other cities within Ukraine, heading towards Dnipro, Kyiv, and Lviv.
In the same context, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that 654,825 of the fled citizens went to Romania, while the rest moved to Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary.
While Moldova received 399,039, Hungary received 398, 932.
