A volcano on Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, erupted early on Sunday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The eruption sent towering columns of ash and smoke rising up to 4,400 meters into the atmosphere.
The agency said the volcanic activity continued after the initial blast and warned that ashfall is expected across parts of the prefecture. Authorities reported no immediate injuries or property damage linked to the eruption.
Sakurajima is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, and eruptions in the region are closely monitored by meteorological and disaster-management teams.
