Thousands of residents have been evacuated south of Manila following the eruption of Mayon Volcano, one of Southeast Asia’s most active volcanoes, authorities said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level to 3 on its five-level scale, citing ongoing Strombolian activity and intermittent lava eruptions. Residents have been urged to remain outside a six-kilometer danger zone due to escalating risks.

Officials also warned of potential landslides and lava flows as volcanic activity intensifies.

According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, around 1,500 families are currently sheltering in evacuation centers.

Heavy ashfall blanketed several towns in Albay Province on Saturday, disrupting transport and daily activity, local media reported.

Mayon Volcano, known for its near-perfect cone shape, remains a major tourist attraction but is under close monitoring as the situation develops.
