Vodafone Egypt has signed agreements worth EGP 30 billion with Telecom Egypt to enhance its infrastructure and accelerate the rollout of 5G services, according to a statement released by Egypt’s Ministry of Communications on Monday.
The agreements will see the installation of fibre optic cables to Vodafone Egypt's mobile sites over a four-year period. In addition, several agreements will be developed for virtual fixed-line services and internet offerings.
Omar Talaat, Egypt’s Minister of Communications, described the partnership as a "cornerstone" for the launch of 5G services in the country.
The agreements also include the development of a messaging services contract, which will extend until 2031, covering both current and future expansions for Vodafone Egypt.
The minister added that 5G licenses were granted to mobile operators in Egypt earlier this year, representing an investment of $675 million.
He also highlighted that the number of mobile towers across Egypt has more than doubled over the last five years, reaching over 36,000 towers nationwide.
Talaat further revealed that in the past two years, investments exceeding EGP 8.8 billion were injected into the mobile sector, with the funds split between the four mobile operators and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) for expanding mobile towers.
According to the statement, Vodafone Egypt, which holds the largest market share in Egypt's mobile services sector, stands out for its extensive global experience in deploying 5G technologies across more than 34 countries worldwide.
The strategic partnership between Vodafone Egypt and Telecom Egypt aims to drive innovation and contribute to the growth of Egypt's telecommunications sector, providing more advanced services to the Egyptian market.
Last month, Vodafone Egypt was granted a 5G mobile service licence for $150 million, marking a significant milestone in the country's telecommunications development.
