Vietnam Tightens Export Measures to US

Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade announced new directives on Tuesday to tighten shipping regulations for goods exported to the United States and other major trade partners, in an effort to curb trade fraud and avoid potential sanctions.

According to a report by CNBC, the ministry warned that fraudulent trade practices are likely to increase amid escalating tensions driven by US tariffs. Without decisive intervention, this fraud could trigger further restrictions from importing countries, creating new barriers for Vietnamese exports.

The move comes as the US under President Donald Trump’s administration threatens to impose retaliatory tariffs of up to 46% on certain Vietnamese imports. While implementation is pending until July, the looming threat has raised concerns about Vietnam’s export-driven economic model, which relies heavily on trade with the United States and foreign investment.

The directive calls for customs officials, ministry staff, and related authorities to enhance oversight and inspections, particularly focusing on the origin of imported raw materials used in export manufacturing.

Stricter controls have also been ordered on the issuance of “Made in Vietnam” labels, especially for companies that have recently seen a sharp increase in requests for certificates of origin. Authorities have been instructed to ramp up factory inspections and prevent the misuse of Vietnamese origin labels by companies engaged in transshipment or re-export schemes.

Vietnam’s proactive stance reflects growing pressure on export-oriented economies to protect their global trade reputation and ensure compliance with international trade laws.

The strengthened measures are seen as part of a broader effort to shield Vietnamese exporters from the potential fallout of ongoing global trade tensions.
