Video...Lebanese Man Sets Himself on Fire in Beirut

On Thursday, a Lebanese citizen tried to set himself on fire near the National Social Security Fund in Beirut’s neighborhood of Bir Hassan, before passers-by managed to put out the flames.

 Reasons for the incident and the man's health and mental conditions were still unavailable.

Lebanon is grasped in a sharp economic downturn ongoing for nearly a year now, and sending many Lebanese into poverty with a sharp devaluation of its currency to the dollar rate, amid political paralysis.

Figures from the State Administration of Statistics showed that inflation in Lebanon, whose plight has worsened since it defaulted on a sovereign debt in March, rose to 89.74 percent year on year in June from 56.53 percent in May.

Several cases of suicide have been reported in Lebanon, with financial difficulties believed to motivate the factor.
