Australia’s second-most populous state of Victoria will enter a seven-day lockdown starting Thursday, as authorities struggle to contain a highly infectious outbreak.
As of 11:59 pm, people will only be permitted to leave their homes for authorized work or permitted education, to shop for essentials, to provide care and for medical and compassionate reasons, grocery shopping, exercise for up to two hours with one other person, and get a coronavirus vaccination.
Victorian Deputy Premier James Merlino noted that people need to remain within five kilometers of their homes when shopping or exercising unless the closest shop was further away.
He added that masks will be required everywhere, both indoors and outdoors, other than their home.
Visitors are also not allowed in a home other than an intimate partner, however, people who live alone will be able to create a ‘single bubble’ with one other person.
There are no visitors allowed to aged care facilities, except for some specific circumstances. Schools will move to remote learning, except for vulnerable children and children of authorized workers. Childcare will remain open.
A full list of the restrictions can be found on the government's website.
The lockdown will be in place until 11.59 pm on June 3.
