Venice has confirmed that it will host the wedding of billionaire Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.
Although no date has been set, Italian media reported that the wedding will take place between June 24 and 26, with celebrations lasting several days.
The city said in a statement, "The speculation and false news circulating about Jeff Bezos' wedding are completely unfounded."
Jeff Bezos is the second-richest person in the world, with a fortune estimated at $209 billion, according to the Forbes Billionaires Index. He is also the owner of The Washington Post and the founder and largest shareholder of Amazon.
The city announced that only 200 guests will be invited, a number that can be easily accommodated without inconvenience to the city, its residents, and visitors. It noted that reports of the presence of many celebrities at the wedding and the city's inability to organize the event are false, noting that it has extensive experience in organizing international events much larger than this.
"Venice is accustomed to hosting events and performances every week, without significant disruption," the city said, referring to the G20 and G7 summits, architecture and film exhibitions, as well as private events and VIP weddings.
Several reports in Italian and international media indicated that Bezos' wedding organizers had already booked rooms in Venice's major luxury hotels and reserved large numbers of gondolas and water taxis, used primarily by locals and tourists for daily transportation, for several days in late June.
The city denied these reports, stating that its top priority is ensuring that the city functions normally for everyone, without any undue disruption.
"We are working together and supporting the organizers to ensure that the event is fully respectful of the city's fragility and privacy," said Mayor Luigi Brugnaro.
Media outlets such as The Sun reported details of Jeff Bezos's lavish wedding in Venice, dubbed the "wedding of the century."
Bezos plans to book mega suites worth $32,000 each at luxury hotels, such as the Aman Hotel and the Gritti Palace, to host guests from around the world.
The newspaper reported that Bezos will use his $500 million luxury yacht, the Koro, to transport guests.
Guests are expected to include US President Donald Trump, as well as celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian, and Bill Gates.
The world's second-richest man was engaged to supermodel Lauren Sanchez two years ago, and their wedding was finally confirmed this summer in Venice, Italy.
After five years of dating, Bezos, 61, proposed to Sanchez with a $2.5 million, 20-carat diamond ring in May 2023.
The couple held a lavish engagement party aboard their superyacht in Positano, Italy, in August 2023.
As a pre-wedding gift, Sanchez will travel to space aboard her billionaire fiancé's rocket next May, where the New Shepard spacecraft will launch for an 11-minute suborbital flight with an all-female crew, including pop star Katy Perry.
