Interim Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez announced during a meeting with members of Parliament that her country is open to international energy agreements based on mutual respect and benefit.
"We are an energy superpower," Rodríguez stated. "There has long been a notion that Venezuela’s oil must be transferred to Northern nations.
Venezuela is open to energy relations that benefit all parties, where economic interaction is defined by commercial contracts. This is our position."
She added, "Venezuela possesses the world’s largest oil and gas reserves. These resources should serve the development of our country and others. We are ready for a relationship based on respect within a framework of contracts that uphold international law."
"We are considering how to transform the economy into an engine for national development, and oil exports are one of those economic engines. We aim to diversify our exports and import only what we do not produce domestically in Venezuela," Rodríguez continued.
The statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump warned that failure by Rodríguez to comply with his demands could lead to a second military operation within the country.
