A senior U.S. official reported on Wednesday that Venezuela’s Acting President, Delcy Rodríguez, will visit the United States soon, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Rodríguez will become the first sitting Venezuelan president to visit the United States in over a quarter of a century, excluding those who attended United Nations meetings in New York.
The invitation reflects a sudden and dramatic shift in relations between Washington and Caracas, following a U.S. special forces operation that led to the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his transfer to a U.S. prison.
Before assuming the acting presidency and pivoting her political course, Rodríguez served as Maduro’s vice president and was a prominent figure in the staunchly anti-American Venezuelan government.
Despite the visit, the acting president remains under U.S. sanctions, which include the freezing of assets.
