A conference on the Soviet legacy in Africa was held by the Valdai International Discussion Club in Petersburg, with a strong participation of 45 personalities from 12 countries.

Egypt was one of these countries that participated in the conference activities and was represented by Sherif Gad, President of the Egyptian Association of Graduates of Russian and Soviet Universities (EAGRSU), and Dr. Nourhan El-Sheikh, a professor at Cairo University.

Under the auspicious of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conference was inaugurated by Andrei Bystretsky, Chairman of the Fund for Development and Support of the Valdai International Club for Dialogue, and featured the great orientalist Vladimir Shubin, senior researcher at the Africa Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Oleg Barbanov, director of programs at the Valdai Club.

The conference addressed many issues related to the history of cooperation between Russia and Africa, and their joint diplomatic ties.

It also highlighted the role of the Soviet Union in supporting the African peoples in their struggle against colonialism and their struggle for independence in addition to the development projects carried out by Soviet experts in many African countries.

During the conference, Sherif Gad discussed the pivotal role of graduates in Egypt and their impact on the enhancing of bilateral relations, pointing out that the jubilee celebration of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states was held on the initiative of the Graduates Association, and preparations are underway to celebrate the 80th anniversary.

It is worth noting that the Valdai International Dialogue Club was established in 2004 and is sponsored by President Putin with the aim of presenting the image of modern Russia to the world.

Since 2014, the activity of the international club has focused on enhancing communication with world specialists in a bid to find solutions to many of the global current issues.
