United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications (USG) Melissa Fleming said the UN system is focusing all its efforts on supporting children in Gaza, particularly through UNICEF and the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
Speaking in an interview with Alqahera News Channel, Fleming said UNRWA, which is responsible for children’s education in Gaza, has reorganized its teams and resumed operations, including building temporary learning centers to give displaced children safe spaces to study and recover.
“We hope these spaces will remain safe — because schools themselves have been targeted,” she said. “Our goal is to help children return to learning in an environment where they can feel secure.”
Fleming also highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation, noting that malnutrition among children has spread widely. “Children are starving, and that’s why the World Food Programme (WFP) is focusing on responsible refeeding,” she said. “We are providing essential nutrients to help children gradually regain their health.”
She further mentioned that the UN has resumed food distribution and reopened bakeries, ensuring aid reaches local communities safely. “We are now able to deliver assistance directly to people with dignity — without forcing them to walk long distances or risk their lives just to find food,” Fleming said.
Fleming acknowledged that Israel has allowed more aid convoys to enter Gaza but stressed that current supplies “are still not enough” to meet urgent humanitarian needs.
