US prosecutors have filed an indictment against a man accusing him of attempting to kidnap the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and assaulting her husband, Paul Pelosi.

The 42-year-old broke into the home of the prominent politician and her husband, in San Francisco, at dawn on Friday, and attacked her husband, Paul, 82, with a hammer.

The defendant, looking for Nancy, reportedly shouted several times, "Where's Nancy?", while she was not inside the house.

But Pelosi, who comes in second place, is among the officials who could take over the presidency in the event of an emergency vacancy, after Vice President Kamala Harris, was not at home at the moment of the storming.

Pelosi was at the House of Congress, in the US capital, Washington.

Although the police confirm that the motive behind the intrusion is not random, it is not yet known.

Prosecutors filed two charges against the intruder, who announced his name, David De Pape, of violating federal laws, one of them assaulting a member of the family of an American official, as retaliation against the way she performs her job duties, which may lead to a sentence of 30 years imprisonment.

Prosecutors also charged with attempting to kidnap Pelosi, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
