ABC News said that the US state of Nebraska will slaughter another 1.8 million chickens after bird flu was discovered on a farm, in the latest sign of an outbreak that has already led to the slaughter of more than 50 million birds across the United States.
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture said the thirteenth case of bird flu in the state was discovered on an egg farm in Discon County, in the northeastern part of the state.
As was the case on other farms where bird flu was detected this year, all chickens must be culled in order to limit the spread of the disease.
The US Department of Agriculture said more than 52.3 million birds in 46 states, mostly chickens and turkeys on commercial farms, have been slaughtered this year due to an outbreak of bird flu.
Nebraska ranks second in the state with the most poultry slaughter, after Iowa, which culled 15.5 million birds, with 6.8 million birds currently infected at 13 farms.
