The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced today, Monday, that the United States intends to join it again, starting in July.
The Director-General of "UNESCO" said Audrey Azoulay: “It is a strong step that reflects trust in UNESCO and pluralism,” while she informed representatives of the body's member states in Paris of Washington's decision to return.
The administration of US President Joe Biden announced, earlier, that it would rejoin UNESCO, after an absence of 5 years, since the era of former President Donald Trump.
According to the “Associated Press” agency, the US State Department said that it had delivered, late last week, a letter requesting the readmission of the United States to membership in the international organization.
The ministry added that US Deputy Secretary of State for Administrative Affairs Richard Verma sent a letter, on June 8, containing the proposed US plan for his country's return to the organization.
