Janet Yellen, US Treasury Secretary said Sunday that American workers who earn $60,000 annually should receive stimulus checks as part of the proposed $ 1.9 trillion relief package.
"We are still defining the exact details but, struggling middle-class families need help," Yellen added on CNN's State of the Union program.
The US administration said earlier that it was open to negotiating who should be eligible to receive the proposed $1,400 stimulus checks, and declined to specify where it believed the income cut should be.
"President Joe Biden is definitely willing to work with members of Congress to determine what is fair and he will not want to see a family that earns more than $300,000 receive these payments," she pointed out.
"If Congress approves the $1.9 trillion relief plan, the US will return to full employment next year, otherwise, unemployment will remain for years," she stressed.
Meantime, Republicans have resisted the administration's COVID-19 relief plan, worried it would unnecessarily increase the national debt after the $4 trillion in aid approved by Congress in 2020.
