The US Department of the Treasury announced a new round of sanctions linked to Iran, as Washington intensifies pressure on networks involved in Iranian oil trade operations.

In a statement published on its official website, the Treasury Department said the sanctions target individuals and commercial entities accused of exploiting Iraq’s oil sector to facilitate the sale of Iranian oil through illicit channels.

According to the statement, the measures also include sanctions against an Iraqi deputy oil minister, who was accused of using his position to assist in redirecting and selling oil on behalf of the Iranian government in violation of existing US sanctions.

Washington said the latest actions are part of broader efforts to disrupt networks that help Iran export oil and finance its activities, stressing that the measures are intended to protect regional stability and global energy security.

The move comes at a time of heightened regional tensions linked to Iran’s nuclear programme and the ongoing crisis surrounding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, while indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue through regional and international mediators.
