According to Sputnik, which cited the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry, US Senator Todd Young and Taiwanese Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu expressed optimism for an even better relationship between the two countries.

Young will be in Taiwan from January 16 through 18. Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan, and Joseph Wu had previously met with him to discuss trade, economic, and security matters.

"They reiterated Taiwan’s pivotal role in regional security and the global economy at this critical geopolitical juncture and eagerly anticipated ever stronger partnership between our countries," the ministry said on Twitter.

After Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the US House, visited Taiwan in early August, the situation in the region deteriorated. Beijing denounced Pelosi's trip, which it saw as an endorsement of secession, and began extensive military drills close to the island. In spite of this, a number of nations—including France, the US, Japan, and others—have since dispatched delegates to the island, raising the already high level of unrest in the Taiwan Strait.

Since 1949, Taiwan has been administered separately from China's mainland. While Taiwan, a territory with its own elected government, insists that it is an autonomous country but refrains from making a formal declaration of independence, Beijing sees the island as its province. Beijing opposes any official contacts of foreign states with Taipei and considers Chinese sovereignty over the island indisputable.
