Esna, Luxor- December 6: United States Ambassador to Egypt Herro Mustafa Garg visited Esna in Luxor Governorate, where she reviewed major U.S.-funded development efforts that restored the city’s heritage, strengthened local businesses, and expanded economic opportunities.
The visit showcased the United States longstanding commitment – and proven excellence – in delivering high-impact partnerships that support peace, stability, and prosperity for both nations.
During the tour, Ambassador Mustafa Garg met with the co-founders of Takween Integrated Community Development, the organization that implemented the U.S.-funded projects in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Supreme Council of Antiquities. The Ambassador visited the restored 18th-century Wakalat al-Geddawi, upgraded market streets and public spaces, improved visitor facilities at the Temple of Khnum, and community-driven initiatives such as Esna Women’s Kitchen.
“Esna’s development is a powerful example of how U.S.-Egyptian partnership, combined with American expertise and innovative partners, can protect invaluable cultural heritage while building a more prosperous future,” said Ambassador Mustafa Garg. “The United States is proud to stand side-by-side with our Egyptian partners as we invest in projects that advance mutual prosperity and anchor a more peaceful, stable region.”
U.S.-funded projects revitalized Esna’s historic core, tripled visitor numbers, and generated economic opportunity. These efforts attracted private investment, trained more than 300 local residents, documented Esna’s heritage, and laid the foundation for a sustainable tourism model that benefits families, entrepreneurs, and businesses alike.
Esna’s revitalization has earned international acclaim, including a UN World Tourism Organization Award and the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture – recognition that underscores the excellence of U.S. partnerships, including in the field of cultural legacy preservation.
