In an interview with the English website Sada El-Balad, Michael Mitchell, the regional spokesperson for the US State Department, addressed several questions posed by the See site. His responses were as follows:
1. What is your comment on the disappearance of American journalist Austin Tice in Syria in 2012?
The United States places the utmost importance on the disappearance of Austin Tice.
2. Are there any indications that he is still alive after his disappearance for this period?
Based on the available information we are evaluating, we believe that Tice is still alive. We will continue to collaborate with all parties and the Syrian Interim Government to gather information about him and ensure his safe return to the United States. We reiterate our commitment not to abandon any missing or detained American citizen.
3. What is the position of the United States on Al-Jolani, who was previously a member of Al-Qaeda?
Al-Jolani remains on the US terrorist lists, and the United States classifies Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) as a terrorist organization due to its involvement in acts that threaten regional stability and violate human rights. The US position has not changed; any alteration in classification or dealings with HTS requires a significant and credible change in behavior and adherence to international community standards. Currently, America will review and evaluate the actions of Al-Jolani and Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham.
4.Can we expect normalization of relations between Washington and Damascus in the near future?
It is too early to make any definitive decisions at this time. However, we hope that circumstances will soon be appropriate for this. The US position is based on a clear vision calling for a comprehensive political transition process, led by Syrian parties with international support, in accordance with Security Council Resolution No. 2254.
