US Special Envoy to Horn of Africa Arrives in Cairo

The US special envoy to the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer, began on Sunday a visit to Cairo as part of a tour that includes the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ethiopia.

"The US government provides nearly $ 1.3 billion in humanitarian aid to the Horn of Africa, which helps alleviate hunger in the areas most affected by the global food crises," The US Embassy in Cairo tweeted.

The US State Department had announced that the US Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa will make a tour that will continue until August 1, "to provide US's support aimed at reaching a diplomatic solution to issues related to the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in a manner that achieves the interests of all parties and contributes to more peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

In a statmnet, it added that Hammer will also hold consultations in Addis Ababa with the African Union.

While in Ethiopia, Hammer will have the opportunity to review progress made in terms of humanitarian aid delivery, accountability for human rights violations and abuses, and efforts to advance peace talks between the Ethiopian government and the authorities in Tigray.

The US Department of State affirmed the US commitment to strengthening diplomatic efforts in support of an inclusive political process that achieves lasting peace, security, and prosperity for the entire Ethiopian people.
