US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack announced his meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Istanbul on Saturday after lifting US sanctions on Damascus.
US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack said in a statement, "Today I met with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister (FM) Asaad al-Shibani in Istanbul to implement President Trump's bold decision to pave the way for peace and prosperity in Syria."
Barrack also said he met with al-Sharaa, who praised the US decision to lift sanctions on Syria.
"Lifting sanctions on Syria will advance our goal of defeating ISIS," he added, commending al-Sharaa's "serious steps" regarding foreign fighters and relations with Israel.
