The US is seeking international support to form a coalition aimed at restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a diplomatic cable from the US State Department seen by Reuters.
The move comes as global oil prices have surged to their highest level in more than four years, driven by fears of prolonged disruption to global energy supplies.
Nearly two months after the outbreak of conflict triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran, the key maritime corridor remains heavily disrupted. The strait is a critical passage for global energy trade, carrying roughly 20% of the world’s oil and gas flows.
The ongoing disruption has intensified pressure on global energy markets, raising prices and increasing concerns about a potential global economic slowdown.
Diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis have so far stalled. Washington is reportedly attempting to break the deadlock through increased pressure on Iran’s oil exports, which form a vital source of revenue for the country.
