The United States said on Tuesday it had completed a new round of what it described as defensive strikes against Iranian military targets, saying the operation was carried out in response to attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes targeted around 80 sites, including Iranian air defence systems, radar networks, anti-ship missile capabilities and command-and-control infrastructure. It also said about 60 boats belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were struck in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM said the operation was intended to reduce Iran's ability to threaten international shipping and added that U.S. forces remained prepared to respond if Tehran failed to comply with the terms of the post-war memorandum of understanding.
Earlier, Iranian state television reported that U.S. strikes had targeted an area containing telecommunications towers in the southern province of Hormozgan.
Iranian media also reported that several people were injured by shrapnel from what it described as a "hostile projectile" at a commercial pier in the city of Sirik. No independent confirmation of the reports was immediately available.
