The U.S. and Saudi Arabia have called for an extension of the current cease-fire between the Sudanese army and a rival paramilitary force, which is set to expire on Monday.

Last week, the two parties agreed to a week-long truce, but it did not put an end to the fighting in Khartoum and other parts of the country.

In a joint statement, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia acknowledged that the current truce is not perfect but emphasized that its extension would allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Sudanese people.

The statement also urged Sudan's military government and the Rapid Support Forces to continue their negotiations.

The conflict erupted in mid-April between the military and the powerful RSF, both of whom were involved in the 2021 coup that ousted Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok's government, which was supported by Western nations.
